Rematriate

Restoring the Heart, Reviving the Source

Join us in restoring sacred hot springs and fostering community healing through our mobile sauna initiative. Together, we can create spaces of renewal and connection.

Understanding Rematriation

What Does Rematriate Mean?

To return stewardship, ceremony, and leadership to Indigenous women and matriarchs, restoring the relational balance between people, water, and the land, and honoring women’s sacred roles as life-givers and protectors. It is the process of returning to a harmonious relationship with the land, water, and community. It involves nurturing these connections with care and respect, ensuring that cultural and natural resources are preserved for future generations. By rematriating, we honor our ancestors and commit to a balanced and sustainable future.

Our Initiatives

  • Restore and protect sacred water sites through Indigenous-led, matriarchal governance.

  • Reinstate ancient gathering practices at the hot springs and other significant landscapes.

  • Connect the restoration of water with the visibility of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW/MMIR).

  • Restoring and advocating for the protection of sacred hot springs
  • Creating culturally safe spaces for healing and reflection
  • Bringing our mobile sauna to various community locations
  • Supporting community-led wellness gatherings and events
  • Partnering with organizations that align with Indigenous healing practices
  • Matriarchal leadership retreats and gatherings at hot springs. Mobile sauna unit to carry water to those who cannot access hot springs.

  • Water healing and rematriation ceremonies.

  • Revival of warm spring dances and Women of Bears Ears gatherings.

Our Partner Sauna Aid

We restore the sanctity of sacred hot springs and support community healing through rematriation projects and our mobile sauna—donated by Sauna Aid, a global initiative providing movable saunas and supportive services in times of crisis. We’re grateful for their donation of a mobile sauna to support Indigenous community healing through our Rematriate work.

Sauna Aid is a multicountry initiative that provides movable saunas and supportive services to people facing natural and man-made disasters. Sauna Aid operates under the International Sauna Aid Foundation (a 501(c)(3)) and the International Sauna Association (ISA), founded in Finland in 1958 and representing national sauna societies around the world.
